Savannah, Georgia — GDOT $12,500/day Islands Expressway penalty
The Georgia Department of Transportation says it is assessing Prince Contracting, LLC $12,500 per day after the contractor missed the Aug. 26, 2026 completion deadline for the Islands Expressway twin-bridge project in Chatham County.
According to GDOT officials quoted by WTOC on Sept. 15, 2026, a revised agreement set that August deadline. Because Prince missed it, liquidated damages of $12,500 began for each day of delay. WTOC reported that as of Tuesday — 20 days past the deadline — fines had reached about $250,000, and would hit $1 million if unfinished by Dec. 4 under that pace.
GDOT spokesperson Jill Nagel said Prince is actively working on completing the twin bridge and that, under the current agreement, fines continue until the bridge is complete. Prince may submit justification for a time extension; if granted, a new agreement could change the completion date.
The Islands Expressway (CR 787) project replaces drawbridges over the Wilmington River, about 0.3 mile east of the Savannah city limit, linking the Savannah area with Whitemarsh, Wilmington, Talahi and Tybee islands (GDOT Project 0007128). One span opened in 2022; the twin bridge remains unfinished after a 2018 award (~$62 million) and an original November 2021 target. Earlier delay penalties that had climbed past $1.9 million were waived when the parties set the Aug. 26, 2026 deadline.
